Arresting Officer in Mel Gibson Drunk Driving Incident Settles Religious Discrimination Case

Deputy James Mee, the officer who pulled Mel Gibson over for drunk driving in Malibu in 2006, has settled a religious discrimination claim against the police department where he was employed at the time, for $50,000.

Deputy Mee claimed that his supervisors made him remove anti-Semitic remarks made by Gibson during the arrest from the report. Following the incident, Mee contends that he was given poor performance reviews and denied promotions.

Mee, who is Jewish, says that he did not file the claim for money, but for the principle of what happened. The trial was scheduled to begin this week but has been canceled following the settlement.
